Melinda Smith has spent most of her professional career working in large-scale coalition and movement building. For the last decade, she served as Director of Partnerships at Freedom Network USA, the largest coalition of advocates working on human trafficking issues in the United States. She worked with survivors, attorneys, social workers, researchers and other advocates to develop system-level solutions to labor exploitation in the US. She convened experts and activists to inform inclusive federal policy and train the field on best practices for historically marginalized communities. Prior to this, she supported language access work as an intern at Partnership for the Public Good and worked at the International Institute of Buffalo. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Masters degree in Social Work.
Music has always been an integral part of Melinda’s life. After working on a national level, she is excited to be back on the ground with her neighbors. She has lived on the West Side for almost 20 years, where she still lives with her family, cat, fish, and five chickens.
Dr. Ricardo Saeb was born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico, where he began his music studies and his community service work. As a classical guitarist, Ricardo has performed in venues across Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. Ricardo has appeared as a guest artist at international festivals and has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras internationally. Ricardo has a Doctorate degree in Musical Arts from the University of Kentucky and is a Fleur de Son Classics recording artist.
Ricardo believes in the importance of the arts for the betterment of society and is committed to promoting social progress through music. With this in mind, Ricardo founded and directs a community program through the Hispanic Heritage Council of WNY, called the HHC Guitar Initiative. The Initiative gives free guitar classes for children of underserved communities, and brings some of the best guitarists in the world to Buffalo in a free International Concert Series. A proud Buffalonian since 2018, Ricardo continues to champion accessible music education, and serves in multiple boards around Buffalo to promote this. Ricardo continues concertizing internationally, and is excited to be part of Buffalo String Works and share his love for music.
Cellist and music educator Andrew Borkowski has performed regularly as a soloist/chamber musician and with orchestras both nationally and internationally.
Andrew was the Artistic Director of the Historic Hudson Chamber Music Series from 2016-18, designing and performing programs set in historical landmark buildings throughout the Hudson Valley.
An avid music educator, he was a member of Associated Solo Artists from 2013-15, giving concerts, lectures, and master classes in schools throughout the Adirondack region of New York, and was a Site Leader and Teaching Artist for CHIME at Empire State Youth Orchestra from 2017-19. He was also the Cello Teaching Artist for the WHIN Music Charter School in New York City from 2019-21, the first charter school of its kind built on the principals of the El Sistema model.
Andrew currently enjoys an active teaching and freelancing career throughout New York state, and plays on a 1920 Marc Laberte cello made in Mirecourt, France.
Whitney Dann made her way to Buffalo after graduating with a Bachelor in Music Industry from SUNY Fredonia. Music has always been a creative outlet for her: in high school, she played piano and flute, but when heading into college she found that working to support musicians was a better fit. With this passion, Buffalo String Works was perfect for Whitney to expand her skills and help support the young musicians of Buffalo. As the Development Manager, she is excited to assist with the growth of BSW and work with the community to bring music to more students across Buffalo. In her spare time, Whitney helps manage social media and booking for local Buffalo bands and attends various shows to see all of the talent that Buffalo has to offer.
Aye Min Thant, originally from Myanmar (Burma), came to Buffalo at the age of 24. Aye considers Buffalo her second home. She attended SUNY Buffalo State College, where she majored in Art and Letters. She received the Hyatt’s Award for Excellence in Sculpture for her sculpture featuring Burmese culture.
Before joining the team at Buffalo String Works, Aye worked as Teaching Assistant at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, High School Program Coordinator, Community Development Assistant at Westminster Economic Development Initiative (WEDI), and Academic Support Specialist at Cradle Beach (Project S.O.A.R.). She has also volunteered with community groups. In her free time she enjoys traveling, gardening, cooking, photography, drawing, and hiking. She lives in Buffalo and she has a lively collection of houseplants.
Aye is fluent in Burmese and an active member of the larger Burmese community in Buffalo. She has received a Certificate in Community Health Worker Training from the Community Network for Engagement, Connection and Transformation (CONECT) partnership with the D'Youville Pathways Program.
Juan Herrera was born in Colombia and grew up on Long Island. Prior to moving to Western New York, Juan worked as a freelance percussionist and educator throughout New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. After graduating from SUNY Fredonia in May of 2022, he moved to Buffalo and was hired as a site manager for Buffalo String Works.
As a percussionist, Juan has studied several different styles of music including orchestral, contemporary classical, jazz, musical theater, West African, Cuban, Balinese gamelan, and more. His versatility and ability to quickly adapt to new styles has led to a wide variety of performing opportunities both in the US and abroad.
As an educator, Juan has taught private lessons, marching band, and several after-school programs throughout New York City, including Cultural After School Adventures (CASA), Midori & Friends, and at the Casita Maria Center for Education. During his time as a Teaching Artist, he worked with hundreds of students where he led classes on bucket drumming, found objects, Foley, radio plays, composition, and improvisation.
Juan holds three degrees in Percussion Performance from SUNY Fredonia (B.A. 2015), CUNY Queens College (M.M. 2017), and SUNY Fredonia (M.M. 2022). Outside of Buffalo String Works, he can be found performing with his group, Liminal Space Ensemble, and debating on whether or not to get a puppy.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Seward is a Buffalo-based musician with over 15 years of performance experience. Lizzie first began studying music at the age of 8, with lessons in violin and cello. She soon also began learning viola, where she quickly found a love for performing and sharing music.
Throughout her career, Lizzie has performed a variety of musical styles with classical and contemporary ensembles including the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She is the founding member and violist in Equinox String Quartet. She also performs regularly and has held principal positions with the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, Amherst Chamber Ensembles, and the Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra.
Lizzie attended the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Bachelor of Science of Engineering degree in Computer Engineering and a minor in Music. She is an advocate for music education in her community and is honored to work with passionate students of all ages to empower them through musical studies.
Julia Port is a violist/violinist originally from Syracuse, NY. She is currently a senior at the University at Buffalo pursuing a dual degree in French and Viola Performance. She began her studies on viola at the age of 8 through the Suzuki Method, and has had a passion for music since.
In 2017 she was a part of the Syracuse Youth Orchestra, performing at Carnegie Hall. It was that experience that solidified her goal of pursuing a degree in performance. She was been a member of the UB Symphony Orchestra, UB Choir, and the Amherst Chamber Ensemble. Since Spring of 2019, she’s held the position of the College of Arts and Sciences Music Department Ambassador.
Julia discovered her enthusiasm for teaching in 2019 while serving as a BSW Teaching Assistant. She is an avid supporter of the power of music, and language learning, to aid in community transformation. She concentrates her French studies at UB on Francophone Countries and Colonization Practices, aiming to spread awareness on both topics. She aims to pursue graduate studies that can incorporate both fields as well as her passion for teaching.
Isaiah joined Buffalo String Works after returning to Buffalo following his college graduation. He is enthusiastic and passionate about all forms of art, with deep connections to theater and music. He believes that the ability to create art is an essential component of a healthy and thriving community, and he is committed to supporting this ability in the best way he can.
Growing up, Isaiah spent a few years in Abu Dhabi, where his dad taught ENL (English as a New Language). During his time there, he was introduced to the piano through lessons at a local music school. For him, piano lessons were an invaluable part of his development. Building a strong relationship with the instrument and his teacher, he found the confidence that helped him thrive in his new home.
Throughout high school and college, Isaiah maintained his connection to the arts through engagement with theater and performance. He’s participated in many plays and musicals and has studied acting in London. Before joining BSW, Isaiah worked as a part of the artist and marketing teams at Northern Stage Theater in White River Junction, Vermont.
In his free time, Isaiah enjoys reading, taking nature walks, painting, and watching anime. He is also a member of the Buffalo ComedySportz improv team.
Eric is a guitarist from Buffalo, NY, born and raised in the west side. He started playing music by attending group lessons at the age of 11. This would eventually lead him to participating in his school’s (CSAT) jazz ensemble and marching band, as well as studying at University at Buffalo & Villa Maria College. He is currently a member of the Fredtown Stompers, and is working on other projects. Eric is very excited to join BSW!
Outside of music Eric enjoys fixing lawnmowers, playing chess, keeping his Australian Cattle Dog Ellie busy with agility, as well as trying to find time to go roller skating & trying to assemble a trivia team.
Teaching Artists
Tyler’s passion for music began at the age of 9 when he first started playing the violin as part of the Boulder Valley School District’s 5th grade music program. Since then, he has continued with the violin and has also adopted viola, music composition, and improvisation. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Music Composition, also completing coursework in string pedagogy. In 2019, he completed his MFA in music composition form Brandeis University. Currently he is finishing his PhD in Music Composition at the University at Buffalo, where he has taught courses in music theory, history, and composition.
As a composer he strives to write music that is about the experience of listening and space. His audiences are encouraged to meditate in the sound worlds he crafts and come to their own unique understanding of what the piece offers to them. His pieces have been performed by internationally renowned groups such as the Brouwer Trio, Yarn/Wire, ECCE, and Sound Icon. Additionally he has written music for his group, The Academic Complex, the UB Open! String Ensemble, The UB Percussion Ensemble, and himself.
In addition to teaching, Tyler is currently working on a composition, arranging, and cataloging project with BSW in which songs are collected from community members and used as materials for music which better connects to them.
Mason is a versatile conductor, having conducted orchestra and chorus alike at the student, community, collegiate, and professional level. His time spent as a private studio instructor and as a PreK-8 general music teacher will be greatly enriched by time spent with his new BSW family. Mason is also an organist, serving several churches across WNY. In addition, he composes and arranges.
In the summers of ‘22 and ‘23, Mason spent time at the Eastman School of Music studying, singing, and conducting Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, respectively. He spent several years as the Cheektowaga Community Symphony’s librarian and stage manager and would later return to serve as a long-term guest conductor in the 2022-23 season.
Mason holds an MM degree in Performance with a focus in orchestral conducting from the University at Buffalo, a BA in Music from Canisius University, and an AS in Music from Niagara County Community College.
Evan Courtin is a freelance violinist and instructor from Buffalo, NY, and has been teaching at BSW since September 2014. He graduated from Buffalo State College with a BA in Music, where he studied with Amy Glidden. During his time Buff State, he served as concertmaster of the BSC Philharmonia.
From 2007 to 2013, Evan was a member of local prog group Peanut Brittle Satellite, which received a Buffalo Music Award in 2008 for Best New Original Music. In 2013 he received an All WNY Music Award as an instrumentalist not traditionally found in a rock band. He is currently working with Wooden Cities, a new music chamber ensemble which seeks to bring awareness to contemporary music through unique, educational programs. Additionally, he plays with Little Cake Cover Band and Evolution of the Arm, for whom he also composes.
Evan has been involved in several different aspects of theatrical violin performance, including productions at Lancaster Opera House and Theater of Youth, and with Zodiaque Dance Company. Recent notable performances include marriage proposals, ziplining across Camp Centerland in his debut as a stunt violinist, and three shows with Buffalo’s own Goo Goo Dolls.
Violist Leanne Darling is a performer, composer and teacher who is comfortable in the concert hall, the nightclub, community center, and art space. Leanne holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Cleveland Institute of Music and has held principal and assistant principal positions in the Florida West Coast Symphony and the Missouri Chamber Orchestra. Specializing in Classical Arabic music as well as Jazz and European Classical music, she combines styles to create repertoire for solo viola and loops generating layers of sound that simulates a whole room full of musicians. Leanne previously taught at Buffalo String Works from 2016-2019 and currently teaches viola, violin and chamber music at University at Buffalo and leads workshops in music improvisation in the Buffalo area.
Brian DeJesus was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, growing up in the neighborhood where Buffalo String Works would eventually take its roots. He started played electric bass when he was 12, upright bass at 18, and studied music at Villa Maria College. A versatile musician, Brian has quickly become a ubiquitous presence on the thriving Buffalo music scene and beyond, and can be found playing in groups that span a variety of sounds and styles from around the world. Current groups include Fredtown Stompers, BPD Trio (Baczkowski/Padmanabha/DeJesus), and John Victor's Divi Romi. DeJesus has also performed with Cages, Buffalo Jazz Octet, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, El Batey of Buffalo, NY, Carol McLaughlin, and many more. Brian is honored to be able to give back to the neighborhood he grew up in by showing music to the students of BSW.
Violist Laura Jay holds the position of 8th-12th grade Orchestra Director at Kenmore East High School in Tonawanda, New York. She has taught with BSW since 2016. Laura began her music education as a student in the Buffalo Public Schools, and later earned the degree of Bachelor of Music in Music Education from SUNY Buffalo State in 2014. Later that year, Laura accepted a fellowship to the Hartt School at the University of Hartford, in which she acted as a mentor teacher for undergraduate music education students and taught undergraduate string techniques courses. Research areas of interest for Laura during her time at the University of Hartford included sound-before-sight teaching pedagogies and preservice music teacher training. Upon her graduation with the degree of Masters of Music Education in 2016, Laura returned to the Buffalo area to accept the position of Orchestra Director at Kenmore East where she directs two orchestras and teaches violin, viola, cello, and bass lessons. In her spare time, Laura enjoys running agility with her dog Raven, and traveling the world with her husband Jacob.
Amy Kelly is a violist/violinist from East Aurora, NY. She began her studies with the Suzuki Method at the age of 7, and continues to play and discover music every day. After receiving a BA and MA in Russian Studies from Colgate and Georgetown Universities, Amy spent almost a decade living and working in Moscow, Russia. After returning to the Buffalo area, she rekindled her love of music, teaching at home and playing in area orchestras. She is principal violist for the Southern Tier Symphony, and has played with Buffalo Opera Unlimited, the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic, I Solisti of WNY, among other local groups. She is also passionate about chamber music and has travelled the globe to attend workshops. After teaching private lessons for over a decade, Amy was thrilled to have the opportunity to join BSW as a teaching artist in 2018. Outside of music, Amy is a dog and cat mom, a real mom, and a book hoarder.
Violinist Isabel Ong is an avid chamber musician with a passion for contemporary music. In addition to serving as a member of the New Juilliard Ensemble at the Juilliard School, she has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, National Sawdust, and MOMA, and most recently was invited to perform in the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra in Switzerland.
A strong advocate for using the power of music to serve a greater humanitarian purpose, Isabel performed at ASAP’s (Advocates for Southeast Asians and the Persecuted) fifteenth anniversary celebration honoring their non-profit service of spreading higher education and improving living conditions for the people of Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. She has performed in Aletheia University of Tamsui, Taiwan’s 130th anniversary concert, providing a mixed recital of Western Classical music and classically-rendered Chinese folk pieces.
An equally dedicated teacher, Isabel is currently teaching at SUNY Fredonia and spends her summers on faculty at Point CounterPoint in Vermont. She holds degrees from Juilliard (BM and MM) and is currently completing her doctorate from the University of South Carolina. Her teachers include Joseph Lin, Laurie Smukler, and Ari Streisfeld. In her free time, Isabel can be found poring over a good book.
Anders is excited to join the Buffalo String Works team this year. He’s been playing String Bass for 14 years and recently graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a bachelor’s and master’s in Music Education. Currently, he performs with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the Warren Philharmonic, and substitutes in the Erie Philharmonic. Outside of music, Anders is an avid photographer, reader, and writer. He is passionate about creating spaces in which students can shape their identities and make music that is meaningful to them.

Jessica Anthony is a Buffalo-based violinist who currently serves as concertmaster of both the Orchard Park Symphony Orchestra and the Avanti Chamber Orchestra. She began her musical journey at the age of 7, and quickly gained a love for music. Growing up in the Finger Lakes region, Jessica was an original member of the Junior Strings Ensemble, eventually became concertmaster of the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and now is a core musician with the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes.
Jessica studied Music Performance at SUNY Fredonia, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in 2016, going on to serve as concertmaster of the College Symphony Orchestra while earning her Master’s Degree, graduating in 2018. Alongside her college career, Jessica taught (and continues to teach) private violin lessons both in-person and via Zoom. Highlights of Jessica’s performance career have included sitting concertmaster for the Live United Music concert, featuring Broadway star Michael Cavanaugh, performing with the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the Greater Rochester Women’s Philharmonic, and more.
Outside of music, in her free time Jessica loves to read horror novels, play video games, and spend time with her partner Nick and their cat, Mochi.
Native to Buffalo, Samantha holds a Bachelors of Music from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Masters of Music from the University of Ottawa, both degrees with a concentration in Cello Performance. Playing now for 20 years, Sam has studied under cellists such as Roman Mekinulov, Marie-Elaine Gagnon, and Paul Marleyn.
An avid chamber music and orchestral performer, Sam has co-founded and is the cellist of the Equinox String Quartet. Sam has played with The Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and still currently plays with The Orchestra of Northern New York, The Western New York Chamber Orchestra, and Amherst Symphony Orchestra. She has held principal positions with WNYCO, The Crane Symphony Orchestra, The Crane Opera Ensemble, The College Light Opera Company, Cheektowaga Symphony Orchestra and the Amherst Chamber Ensembles.
Outside of cello, Sam enjoys reading, painting, and being outdoors. She is also a singer/songwriter and producer who goes by the artist name GODDESS. Her music is heavily influenced by artists such as Adele, The Black Keys, and Hozier. Sam released her first self-titled album in January of 2024. Catch Sam playing her own original music around the Buffalo area!
Katie Weissman began playing the cello at the age of three at Buffalo Suzuki Strings after seeing Yo-Yo Ma appear on Sesame Street. She holds a Bachelors of Music in Cello Performance from Boston University, and her principal teachers include Nancy Anderson, Feng Hew, Michael Reynolds, Amanda Truelove and Roman Mekinulov. When at home in Buffalo, Katie is cellist and backup singer in the Little Cake Cover Band and is a substitute for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She also plays with contemporary music ensemble Wooden Cities, the composition think-tank Evolution of the Arm, experimental ensemble Root Cellar, folkrock bands TEOA and Birddog, and various other chamber music outfits in the Western New York area. In addition, she curates the concert series “Minuets & Mimosas” at Duende at Silo City. She has toured at home and abroad, and has lent her playing to many recording projects in the studio, including multiple albums and stage performances by Buffalo's own Goo Goo Dolls. She teaches privately in her own studio, and currently lives in Williamsville with her dogs, rabbits and parakeet.
Tajai Shorter is a Black violinist and aspiring music educator from District Heights Maryland. She began playing the violin around the age of 10 and quickly fell in love with the instrument. In her early years, Tajai took private lessons at the Levine School of Music while participating in a variety of summer programs and ensembles throughout her musical career. Some highlights include joining the Prince George’s County Philharmonic twice for their annual Side-By-Side concert, attending the yearly chamber music festival at the Apple Hill Center of Chamber Music, and performing numerous orchestral and chamber works at the Eastern Music Festival at Guilford College.
Tajai earned her Bachelor of Violin Performance degree at Shenandoah Conservatory while also taking private lessons on viola for 3 years. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Tajai was able to discover a deep passion for music education. She is excited to be joining the team at Buffalo String Works and helping them pursue their mission of making music accessible for all youth.
Tajai is currently pursuing her Master’s in Violin Performance at the University at Buffalo and is studying under professor Melissa White. As a musician herself, Tajai hopes to share her knowledge of music with other young artists who may not have the resources to pursue their passions as she believes everyone deserves access to quality education regardless of who they are or where they come from.
