Juan Herrera was born in Colombia and grew up on Long Island. Prior to moving to Western New York, Juan worked as a freelance percussionist and educator throughout New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. After graduating from SUNY Fredonia in May of 2022, he moved to Buffalo and was hired as a site manager for Buffalo String Works.
As a percussionist, Juan has studied several different styles of music including orchestral, contemporary classical, jazz, musical theater, West African, Cuban, Balinese gamelan, and more. His versatility and ability to quickly adapt to new styles has led to a wide variety of performing opportunities both in the US and abroad.
As an educator, Juan has taught private lessons, marching band, and several after-school programs throughout New York City, including Cultural After School Adventures (CASA), Midori & Friends, and at the Casita Maria Center for Education. During his time as a Teaching Artist, he worked with hundreds of students where he led classes on bucket drumming, found objects, Foley, radio plays, composition, and improvisation.
Juan holds three degrees in Percussion Performance from SUNY Fredonia (B.A. 2015), CUNY Queens College (M.M. 2017), and SUNY Fredonia (M.M. 2022). Outside of Buffalo String Works, he can be found performing with his group, Liminal Space Ensemble, and debating on whether or not to get a puppy.
